We are big fans of the TiVo interface and ease of use.  Not much has changed with TiVo (sans sharing and some web additions) until now with the all-new TiVo interface TiVo Premiere ($299.99 to $499.99 for XL).  The new TiVo Premiere interface loves HDTV, is ready to connect to the web, and can search across many platforms including YouTube, the internet, cable, Netflix, Blockbuster, Amazon On Demand, and all new movie and TV collections.  The interface/database is improved as well with the ability to get more info on shows or actors by clicking.  Additionally you can now see how much space is left on your TiVo and have access to FrameChannel and Pandora Radio.

The new TiVo comes in standard Premiere and and XL model.  They both offer HD recording, an E-SATA port for external storage, 1080p video output, and a multistream CableCARD slot.  The XL version has a higher capacity (from 45 hours up to 150 hours) and THX certification.

The TV Hat is functional… but beyond that it is close to a gag gift.  Guaranteed to repel the opposite sex while you watch TV.  Watch the video to get the full picture… at least their video is good (they get the humor of the product).

Looks like Netflix is planning to open up the 1080P HD stream later this year.  No concrete date, no idea of which players will get the stream, and no idea what percentage of the Netflix catalog will be offered in 1080P HD.  Considering only 6% of their current offerings are in 720P I imagine it will start small.

Viewsonic is getting serious about the portable media player business with it’s latest gadget the MovieBook VPD550T.  The VPD550T comes with a 5-inch LCD touch screen (800×480-pixel resolution), 8GB of memory, microSD expansion slot, and an HDMI output capable of full 1080p.  Read on for more details.

Because of the hefty price tags attached to most portable media players (Archos, Cowon, etc…)… sales have been slow.  Honestly, how many people do you know that have a portable media player?  Looks like Viewsonic may have figured this out with their $199 price point.  The MovieBook VPD550T will support  DAT, MPG, MPEG, VOB, MP4, MOV, AVI, DVD Video, ASF, WMV, MKV, TS, RM/RMVB, MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC ,OGG, FLAC, APE, AC3, and DTS formats.  Image and ebook content will also be able to be viewed on this gadget.  Expect battery life to be about 20 hours of audio and 4 hours of video.

Until my iPhone or iPod gets 1080p this isn’t a bad addition to the gadget pile.  The VPD550T is expected to hit in late March or early April.

Boxee has made a name for itself by simplifying the process of consolidating entertainment content for the PC.  The product is great… but not everyone wants to watch TV on their computer… or have a computer tethered to a TV in the living room.  Looks like Boxee has addressed the issue with the launch of their new IPTV set top box powered by the Nvidia Tegra 2.

The best part about Boxee’s approach is rather than using the traditional content provider model, Boxee acts as a portal to content providers.  This is good because you get just about everything the web has to offer = lots of content.

Looks like Sybas Technology is jumping into the video content boxes with a clean UI and few extra frills.  The Popbox has an ethernet port for getting the goods and a HDMI port for putting it on your TV.  Forget about storage unless you want to add an SD card or USB hard drive.  No need for a Tivo or PC to run Netflix online on your TV now… not bad.
