Last year, in anticipation of my Euro Trip, I bought the Samsung NC10-14GW notebook and was excited enough about it to write a semi glowing review. This year I decided to upgrade to the new Samsung NC20-21BK, feeling emboldened by the Obama administration, brimming with Hope and Change over the state of the economy ……juuuuust yanking ya, I think before this clown is done with the presidency we are going to be living in tents using abacuses.

Anyhoo, I bought the NC20. Upon receiving the unit, before powering it up for the first time, I upgraded the memory to the 2gb of phresh DDR2 800 uberness. Immediately, the weight of the NC20 surprised me, the old NC10-14GW weighs in at 2.90 lb and the new NC20 at 3.30lb (and yes, I actually put them on the scale). The screen size upgrade is a Big Deal! How much would YOU pay for extra 2 inches?! The 1280×800 12.1” screen totally rules over the old 1024×600 10.2” and its very bright and very sharp. While the new Nano U2250 processor is fast enough to run all the business apps like M$ Office 2007, and the VIA Chrome9 HC3 IGP graphics are pimpin enough to run legacy games, you will not be running Crysis.
The keyboard is a bit of a disappointment, the NC10 had the 93% keyboard, the NC20 keyboard is not appreciatively bigger, with about half an inch more of unused plastic on each side. Also, the tilde/apostrophe key has been mysteriously migrated left of the spacebar (WTF) displacing the Alt key one to the left, so there is an adjustment needed when you pinch the old Alt-F4 . Once the unit was decrappified of the McAfee Security Center, there was no other bloatware in sight. The speakers sound is not spectacular, but damn good for a netbook, and since I use my headphones most of the time, this is a non-issue. I am not a fan of the black glossy finish of the NC20 – after minor amount of handling with clean dry hands this thing looked like it was profanely groped by greasy baboons. The bitchin matte white finish of the NC10-14GW was not available, so the old Ford Model T Black was the only color option. Huge props for the extra long battery life, makes competition sad and inadequate, I like! Let’s see what else, oh yeah it’s the SAME EXACT THICKNESS as the NC10, I got them side by side right now, and it’s the SAME! Last year I paid $479 for the NC10, last week I paid $509.99 for the NC20-21BK and it came with a free Samsung External Burner – a pretty good deal. To make a short story long, freaking Samsung continues to deliver the sexxay, thanks!

There’s not a lot going on here in terms of technology: the little USB still camera attaches to your pet’s collar and can automatically take pictures at 1-, 5-, or 15-minute intervals. The camera can hold a total of 40 shots in 640×480 resolution. It seems like the camera would be more efficient if it could automatically upload pictures via Wi-Fi to an online account like Flickr or Snapfish so you can monitor your animals on the fly, but as it stands you can only check out the pictures after the damage has been done.

The next time you find yourself combing through the refrigerator trying to find that missing steak, consult the camera–all signs point to Beethoven.

A couple of weeks ago Sanyo Japan was kind enough to send us a test sample of their latest high-end HD camera, the Xacti HD2000. We’ve already talked about the HD2000, but let’s refresh your memory.
The HD2000 feature a 8Mpix censor for still pictures and 5.31Mpix for videos, it supports both SD and SDHC cards up to 32GB, and shoots video in a gorgeous full HD at 60fps (1920 x 1080 / 60p), has a 10x optical zoom an ISO range from 50 to 3200 and is Sanyo’s first camera with a Reverse Sequential Shot function and a Hi-Speed Video shot mode up to 600fps.

In order to better understand the following review, it may be important to read back what we wrote about its little brother the Xacti HD1010 here New Xacti HD1010 Hands On! Not Very Revolutionary….
The Xacti HD1000 is a huge step forward for any one looking for a compact and powerful HD camera, Full HD. Impressive camera, the HD1000 isn’t prefect, and later Sanyo released a HD1010 model fixing many flaws and correcting bugs that were found on the HD1000. As you can imagine, we were quite impatient to see the HD2000, and to finally get some playtime with it.
Design
There are virtually NO differences whatsoever between a HD1000, HD1010 and HD2000, these camera are strictly similar, only what is written on the camera is different from each model, so if like us you’re are a huge fan of its “pistol” like shape that provides increased comfort when shooting video, you’ll be very pleased that Sanyo didn’t change a thing!
Usability and Video
As you may have guessed, improvements added by Sanyo on the HD2000 are within the camera body, or skin if you prefer. First Sanyo added more “RAW” power to the HD2000, we’re moving from a 4Mpix censor (HD1010) for videos to 5.31Mpix on the HD2000.
Sanyo also added a more powerful CPU and now records video in 60p instead of the 30p on the 1010, and has better video bitrates for better video quality from 12Mbps to now 24Mbps. The higher your bitrate the “bigger” will be your video files but with increased quality.
To give you an idea, our P2 video camera records video in 100Mbps while the average PRO Summer Sony camera records up to 24Mbps due mainly to the miniDV limitation. The bottom line, higher bitrate means better video.
The HD1010 had a 300fps video mode (in 448×336), the HD2000 now lets you record video up to 600fps in a tiny image size of 192×108 at 8Mbps. To be honest, if a feature like this was impressive on the Casio EX-FH20 and its 1000fps, I really don’t understand the need of such mode especially when your output video is so small. Who will use a 192×108 video (10 times smaller that the 1920×1080 that we can record in 60fps). David our photographer and I would have WAY more appreciated a 1280×720p60 mode instead of slow motion.
What about video in 1920×1080… If the HD2000, like the 1000 and 1010 will never replace or achieve the video quality of our beloved P2 camera, for most of us the HD2000 will give stunning videos, and surprisingly even better ones once reformatted and exported in 720p.
Compared with the HD1000 and HD1010, the HD2000 gives crispier and sharper videos and the 60fps mode will make your videos smoother and more realistic. For movie like a 24p video you’ll have to do your magic in post prod. Once again Sanyo outperforms their direct competitors thanks to beautiful and sharp video…
Unfortunately if video is amazingly crispy and sharp, Sanyo is still struggling with both the AF (Auto Focus) and Image Stabilizer. Yes they did improve these two points and the HD2000 will please many of you, but as far as we’re concerned, Sony did a better job in both AF and Image Stabilization. We hope Sanyo will use Panasonic’s expertise for future Xacti.
Photos
Being called the new “Dual Camera” and trying to create a new category of hybrid cameras, not only does the Xacti record great looking videos, but it is also can shoot photos, with two very interesting modes: the Reverse Sequential Shot function enables you to NEVER miss the correct moment shooting a moving object when taking pictures while recording video.
If we have no real complaints regarding video quality, we can’t say the very same for pictures… Yes, if you shoot a photo and view it on your screen you’ll have a pretty descent shot, but if you zoom on it and get to the 100% mode you’ll see how poor photos are… Rest assured this is not only Sanyo’s problem, I own a compact a Canon IXUS 920is and they both provide roughly the same quality. If you know what I’m talking about or a happy owner of a 920is you’ll be very happy with the HD2000 photo quality… But compared to the HD1010, photos taken with the HD2000 are way better! But don’t expect anything close to even a Canon 300 or 350D DSLR quality.

Dom Perignon’s Twin Set includes the Vintage 1995 and the Oenothèque 1995. Recently, Richard Geoffroy, the chef de cave for Dom Perignon, showcased the special vintage, the Oenothèque 1995, at the Ritz-Carlton in San Francisco. The 1995 vintage was first released in 2002, and is bottled once again. Richard Geoffroy said, “It’s like putting a magnifying lens on top of it”. The twin set brings the 7-year-old original and the 13-year-old fraternal twin together. While the Dom Vintage 1995 has flavors of golden honey, marzipan and wet straw, the Oenothèque 1995 boasts hints of mineral, oyster shell, seaweed, iodine, toast, smoke and peat. The Dom Perignon’s Twin Set is available for $550 at Crush Wine and Spirits.

Some say you can’t put a price on principles, those people are left eating crow time and time again. Welcome to the real world! The Pirate Bay, the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker, undoubtedly the world’s largest distributor of bootlegged copyrighted material, the guys who talked a Big Game about values and not selling out,

the guys whose party even got a seat in 2009 European Parliament election, the guys whose site been rocking a low 100s Alexa rating, the guys who used to publically reply with “F-you!” to Cease and Desist emails from every top lawyer of every top media company, the guys who ran performance art projects, the guys who took up lofty world causes, the guys who almost bought an island, the guys who got keelhauled by a judge who turned out to be a member of a copyright organization, the guys who were facing over $3 million in damages and possible jail time, the guys… Well you know – those guys! Those guys, today, sold out to a Swedish software company Global Gaming Factory X AB for $60 million Swedish crowns ($7.8 million Obama dollars). Global Gaming Chief Executive Hans Pandeya commented on the sites future by saying “We would like to introduce models which entail that content providers and copyright owners get paid for content that is downloaded via the site”. Monetized piracy? Smells like Napster?

Time to cut the rhetoric… Remember kids, big companies and governments always win – always! It’s not a matter of Bad or Good, it’s just the way it is. From the bottom of my heart, thanks for the YEARS of support *pours a 40oz of GROG on the ground* RIP – The Pirate Bay.

I, like most, started using Microsoft’s Internet Explorer because it was what I started off using and it came with the computer I bought. It works (sorta) so why switch?

Have you ever noticed that as the day goes on your computer and browser get sluggish? I have found that this is typically because Internet Explorer is a memory hog, and the longer you use it, the worse it gets.

I switched to Mozilla Firefox about a year ago and “poof” my problems were solved. My computer started running faster… longer. Give it a shot and let me know what you think. Details about Firefox 3.5 after the break.

Security & Privacy View the video

<img alt="Instant Web Site

Instant Web Site ID

Want to be extra sure about a site’s legitimacy before you make a purchase? Click on a site favicon for an instant identity overview. Another click digs deeper: how many times have you visited? Are your passwords saved? Check up on suspicious sites, avoid Web forgeries and make sure a site is what it claims to be.

Private Browsing

new Sometimes it’s nice to go undercover. When this feature is enabled, you won’t leave a single browsing fingerprint behind for others to discover. You can slip in and out of private browsing mode quickly, so it’s easy to return to what you were doing before as if nothing ever happened (you can also browse privately all the time).

Forget This Site

new Having second thoughts about having visited a certain Web site? With this feature, you can remove every trace of that site from your browser—no questions asked!

Anti-Malware

improved Firefox protects you from viruses, worms, trojan horses and spyware. If you accidentally access an attack site, it will warn you away from the site and tell you why it isn’t safe to use. Firefox checks every part of a Web page before loading it to make sure nothing harmful is sneaking in the back door.

Anti-Phishing

Shop and do business safely on the Internet. Firefox gets a fresh update of web forgery sites 48 times in a day, so if you try to visit a fraudulent site that’s pretending to be a site you trust (like your bank), a browser message—big as life—will stop you.

Parental Controls

Enforce parental control settings you’ve entered on Vista—stop unwanted downloads and more.

Clear Recent History

improved Clear all your private data or just your activity over the past few hours with a few quick clicks. You have full control over what to delete, and then your info is gone for good—on your own computer or the one at your local library. It’s that easy.

Customized Security Settings

Control the level of scrutiny you’d like Firefox to give a site and enter exceptions—sites that don’t need the third degree. Customize settings for passwords, cookies, loading images and installing add-ons for a fully empowered Web experience.

Add-ons

Firefox looks for a secure connection before installing or updating add-ons, 3rd party software, and Personas.

Password Manager

We’ve seamlessly integrated this feature into your surfing experience. Choose to “remember” site passwords without intrusive pop-ups. Now you’ll see the “remember password” notification integrated into your view at the top of the site page.

Anti-Virus Software

Firefox integrates elegantly with your antivirus software. When you download a file, your computer’s antivirus program automatically checks it to protect you against viruses and other malware, which could otherwise attack your computer.

Pop-Up Blocker

Banish pop-ups (and pop-under windows) from your surfing experience once and for all. Or, find a happy medium—choose to view blocked pop-ups or create an “allow” list of sites whose pop-ups you’re okay with seeing.

Automated Update

Our open-source security strategy lets us find—and fix—security issues in record time, making Firefox the safest way to surf. Install upgrades when you receive automatic notification or wait until you’re ready..

Performance

Smaller Memory Footprint

Short and sweet, Firefox uses less of your computer’s memory while it’s running.

Memory Management

With a new management function in place, Firefox keeps memory usage under control. The XPCOM cycle collector continuously cleans up unused memory. Plus, hundreds of memory leaks have been remedied.

Faster Page Load

A redesigned page rendering and layout engine means you see Web pages faster—and in the way they were meant to be seen.

Color Profile Support

improved The colors in your online photo albums will be sharper and more brilliant than ever, thanks to improvements to our graphics engine.

Super Speed

new Fasten your seatbelt: Firefox 3.5 includes the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine, which gives the browser dramatically better performance than ever before. Firefox has always been fast, but this is the fastest Firefox ever (more than twice as fast as Firefox 3, and ten times as fast as Firefox 2), meaning Web applications like email, photo sites, online word processors and more will feel snappier and more responsive.

Firefox Performance: Fast — Faster — Fastest

Customization

Over 6,000 ways to customize

improved The sky’s the limit with a growing library of over 6,000 Firefox add-ons, little extras you choose to download and install for a browser that works your way. Manage online auctions, upload digital photos, see the weather forecast in a glance and listen to music all from the convenience of your browser. There’s no need to open a new window or tab for each task. If you’re not sure where to begin, try Fashion Your Firefox—a handy Web application that recommends add-ons based on your interests.

Add-ons Manager

Find and install add-ons directly in your browser. You no longer need to visit the add-ons Web site—instead simply fire up the Add-ons Manager. Not sure which add-on is right for you? Ratings, recommendations, descriptions and pictures of the add-ons in action help you make your selection. The fully integrated add-on manager even lets you view, manage and disable third-party plug-ins in a few easy clicks.

Browser Look & Feel

Dress up your browser as you like it. With themes, choose a darkened control panel reminiscent of a space ship, faux wood paneling, or hundreds of other unique looks to surround your surfing. With Personas, add a simple, lightweight “skin” to your browser in an instant. (Personas is a Mozilla Labs project.)

Beyond Add-ons

Add-ons are the cornerstone of customization, but adapting Firefox to suit your style doesn’t stop there. You can add new search engines, change toolbar preferences, display different sizes, shapes and styles for your browser’s navigation buttons and more. With additional preferences, you can specify a Web mail client, such as Gmail, to open up when you click on an address from a Web page or set up a news reader application for the blogs you encounter.

Personal

Awesome Bar

improved A quick way to get to the sites you love—even the ones with addresses you only vaguely remember. Type in term into location bar (aka the Awesome Bar) and the autocomplete function includes possible matching sites from your browsing history, as well as sites you’ve bookmarked and tagged in a drop down.

For example, you could enter the tag: “investments” to find “www.fool.com”. The Awesome Bar learns as you use it—over time, it adapts to your preferences and offers better fitting matches. New enhancements for Firefox 3.5 give you greater control over the Awesome Bar, and include privacy settings.

View the video

Tags

improved Label a site with names or categories that are meaningful to you. For example, you can label the site www.bbc.co.uk with the “news” tag as well as the “foreign investments” tag, plus give www.nytimes.com the “news” tag, too. When you enter “news” into the location bar, both sites will be shown as results. A single site can have multiple tags, and there’s no limit to the number of tags you can create. You may not remember the exact name of a site, but with a tag, you’ll be able to find it in a way that makes sense to you.

Library

Make your browser as efficient as you can imagine. Your browsing history (all the websites you’ve seen) and your bookmarks (all the websites you’ve saved) are archived in the Library, where they can be easily searched and organized. You can also save your frequent searches in dynamic smart folders that automatically update as your bookmark list and history grow.

One-Click Bookmarking

Manage your bookmarks a lot or a little. One click on the star icon at the end of the location bar bookmarks a site. Two clicks and you can choose where to save it and whether to tag it. File bookmarked sites in easy-to-access folders and organize according to theme (like “job search” or “favorite shopping”). Find your bookmarked sites in a flash by entering the tag, page or bookmark name into the location bar. The more you use your tags and bookmark names in the location bar, the more the system will adapt to your preferences.

View the video

Smart Bookmark

Find things fast with Smart Bookmarks. Click on the Bookmarks menu for quick access to sites organized by most visited, recently bookmarked and recently tagged.

Productivity

Platform-Native Look & Feel

improved The Firefox platform looks and feels like home. Think of it as a Firefox who’s really good at making friends. Whether you use Windows Vista, Mac or Linux, the browser seamlessly integrates into your computer’s environment. A native look makes for a flawless interface that never gives you pause.

RSS Feed Reader

You can read feeds using an online Web service, a client-side feed reader or by creating a Firefox Live Bookmark. So there’s no need to comb the Web for the latest news and updates. See the latest headlines in the toolbar or menu and go directly to the articles that catch your eye.

Download Manager

Download files seamlessly and securely! A pause and resume feature means there’s no need to wait for a download to finish before you disconnect. So, if you’re halfway through the latest White Stripes album and it’s time to catch the bus, just pause and pick up downloading when you get home. The resume function also works if your system crashes or is forced to restart. The manager shows your download progress and lets you search your files by name or the Web address where the download came from.

Spell Checking

A built-in spell checker lets you enter text directly into Web pages—like blog posts and Web-based email—without worrying about typos and misspellings. Work directly with the Web and save yourself a step.

Session Restore

improved Restart the browser without losing your place after you install an add-on or software update. And, if Firefox or your computer unexpectedly closes, you don’t have to spend time recovering data or retracing your steps through the Web. If you’re in the middle of typing an email, you’ll pick up where you left off, even down to the last word you typed. Session Restore instantly brings back your windows and tabs, restoring text you entered and any in-progress downloads.

Full Zoom

Visit your favorite news page and read the caption under the picture—or view the picture itself in a size you can see. An elegant new zoom feature lets you swoop in and see entire web pages. They scale in the way you’d expect them to, with all the elements of a page’s layout expanding equally, so you can zero in on what matters.

Tabs

At first glance, they look like little labels living above the site you’re currently visiting. But they are a brilliant way to browse multiple sites at once. Simple and easy, you can think of them as the electronic version of a well kept filing cabinet, with the tabs as the dividers and the sites as the content kept in folders. Each new site appears as a new tab (not a new window) and can be accessed in one click.

Easy Organization

new improved Get your sites in order. Simply arrange the order of your tabs by dragging them in one swift move of your mouse. Or, if your browser window is getting cluttered with too many tabs, just drag a tab out of its existing spot and it will automatically open up in a new window.

Reopen Closed Tabs

If you accidentally close a tab, you can reopen it in one click. Just view Recently Closed Tabs in the History menu and select the tab you’d like to reopen.

Save on Exit

When you quit Firefox, you can save your tabs and windows for the next time you start. No need to reopen all your windows each time you start a session.

Smooth Scrolling

Like to have all 20 of your favorite pages open at once? An elegant new feature lets you scroll through tabs easily to see them all and access the one you want quickly.

Search

Smart Keywords

Search the Web in record time with smart keywords. With a few clicks you can assign keywords to search engines, and then simply enter your key and search words in the location bar. With this feature, typing “book home building” can search Amazon.com, and take you right to books about home building without ever pausing at the homepage.

Search Suggestions

Start typing in the search bar and it will prompt you with a drop down of filled-in suggestions, plus you can use the search bar as a calculator, converter and more.

Integrated Web Search

Searching the Web is a breeze with the search box inline, just to the right of your location bar. Select the search engine of your choice and type what you want to find directly into the box. The width is adjustable so you can make it bigger if you need more space.

Hundreds of Search Engines

Access your favorite search engines quickly from the integrated search bar. You can use a new engine for each search, or stick to your favorite. Choose from a preset dropdown list of engines or select “manage search engines” from the same list to browse search engine options offered as add-ons. Check out your choices now.

Find

The find feature appears in a keystroke. Search for a word or phrase on an open Web page. Highlight text before using the feature and finder opens pre-filled with your selection. See all instances of your search at once, or scroll backwards and forwards through the appearances of the word on the page.

Universal Access

Improved Text Rendering

Read your language as it’s written—more like real life. With a new graphics engine, Arabic, Persian, Punjabi and other script languages now render in a remarkably seamless way.

Downloadable Fonts

new View a wider variety of fonts on Web sites while you surf. Site designers and developers can create custom fonts that will be displayed and rendered properly even if you don’t have the font installed on your computer.

Emphasis on Accessibility

By minimizing keystrokes, allowing users to zoom in on Web pages and supporting screen readers, Firefox is that much easier to use for those with mobility disabilities and visual impairments.

Universal Customization

Go beyond translation and experience the web in a way that makes sense to you. Local developers who know what’s best for their community have customized your Firefox browsing experience with local dictionaries, search providers, live bookmarks and Web feeds. Depending on where you live, you’ll see things like BBC headlines tailored to your region or experience features that work with Baidu, the Chinese search engine.

The Language of Firefox

improved Firefox speaks your language like no other browser on earth. Because the Web is a worldwide resource and we believe that resource belongs to the people, we’ve made our browser available in as many local languages as possible. We have over 70 different translations, from French and Chinese to Finnish and Czech. Find your language.

The Cutting Edge

Offline Browsing

improved Take your computer offline and still have information at your fingertips. Certain enabled sites may allow applications—like your Web-based email—to stay with you at all times.

Location-Aware Browsing

new Now Firefox can tell websites where you’re located so you can find info that’s more relevant and more useful (for example, getting directions or finding restaurants near you). It’s all optional – Firefox doesn’t share your location without your permission – and is done with the utmost respect for your privacy.

Web Application Integration

Expand the power of Web-based applications. In the past you’d click on an email address in a Web site and your computer’s default email application would open up to send a message to the linked address—even if you never email through the program. Now you can choose a Web mail clients (like Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo! Mail) to launch when you click on that email address.

Next-Generation Graphics

improved You have to see it to believe it. The rendering of text and graphics, including SVG and Canvas, is faster and sharper than ever before, thanks to our upgraded graphics engine. Firefox 3.5 automatically color corrects images that have the color profile data included (like your digital photos) to make sure the colors are exactly as intended.

Open Video and Audio

new Introducing the future of online media! Firefox is the first browser to support open video and audio formats, allowing practically limitless new ways for sites to display rich content. The open formats also allow modern web pages to display media without requiring a plug-in or a proprietary software download.

Newest Web Technologies

improved Brand new and enhanced functionalities enable Web site authors and developers to create advanced content and applications. Support is now available for:

CSS2.1

CSS3

HTML5

SVG Filters

Ogg Vorbis

Ogg Theora

Most speaker dock systems for the iPod/iPhone sound ok but tend to be lacking the bass department. And if they come with a subwoofer (which is rare) they usually cost an arm and a leg… not anymore. The Philips DC912 is available here for $79.99. Details of how to get this deal after the break.

The DC912 is $79.99, but you need to pay with PayPal to get that price. For me that’s not an issue: I routinely sell stuff on eBay to fund my PayPal account, which I then use for stuff just like this.

If you don’t have an account, the dock will run you $109.99–still a pretty solid deal considering the list price.

So, what’s the big deal about the DC912? For starters, check the photo: It’s sweet-looking! Love that silvery flat-panel design. You can use the stand or mount the dock on a wall using an included bracket.

Cooler still, it comes with a standalone subwoofer. A wireless subwoofer. Combined with the dock, it churns out a seriously impressive 100 watts of audio power.

The unit also includes a remote, an FM tuner with 20 programmable presets, and an aux jack in case you want to connect a non-iPod player. It can even play MP3s and WMAs stored on USB drives and SD/MMC cards.
