The compact camera market has taken a beating from an unlikely place, the smartphone. As smartphone cameras continue to improve, many folks now use them as their main shooter. The one thing missing is a good digital zoom.
Canon’s latest compact camera hopes to fill that void with a small form factor and a big 40x zoom lens. The compact PowerShot SX730 HS ($399) offers a focal range equivalent to a 24-960-mm optic on a full frame camera with just 20.3-megapixels and a 2.3-inch CMOS sensor. The DIGIC 6 image processor allows for a top shooting speed of 5.9fps and full HD 1080p videos at 60 fps. The SX730 HS camera weighs in at just 10.6-ounces (300-grams) and is 4.3 x 2.5 x 1.6 inches (110 x 64 x 40 mm) in size. The rear screen can tilt and there is improved WiFi, NFC, and Bluetooth sharing options.
