Lost keys are a personality trait. The Apple AirTag (2nd generation) is Apple’s second crack at making that trait temporary. Same coin-sized puck vibe, same Find My network party tricks – but Apple’s second-gen Ultra Wideband chip stretches Precision Finding up to about 1.5x farther, and the built-in speaker is pitched as up to 50% louder so you can actually hear the chirp under a couch cushion fortress.
Specs stay classically tiny: about 1.26 inches across, 0.31 inch thick, 0.42 oz, IP67 splash/dust rating, and a user-swappable CR2032 that Apple claims lasts over a year of normal use.
Bluetooth handles proximity; NFC still covers Lost Mode taps. Setup is still the classic “pop it near an iPhone” one-tap dance.
New party trick: Precision Finding on compatible Apple Watch models (Series 9 / Ultra 2 and newer with the right watchOS), so you can hunt luggage without waving your phone like a metal detector at TSA. Sharing item location with trusted people and airline partners is still in the Find My toolkit. Privacy theater remains Apple-flavored – the tag is for your stuff, with unwanted-tracking protections baked into the network story.
Pricing is intentionally boring: about $29 for one, $99 for a four-pack (street prices sometimes dip). Personalized engraving lives on Apple’s storefront if you want your AirTag to judge you by name. Full expanded Precision Finding wants a newer iPhone (Air / 15 and later, with some exclusions); older phones still get the network, just less laser-pointer drama.
