I tend to be a lake guy because I just don't enjoy the ocean. Too many creatures that want to bite or sting you in the ocean. So instead of surfing I took up wakeboarding, nothing has bitten me in the lake, yet.
Looks like I may be taking up surfing in the next year or so if Neptunic Technologies releases their new anti-shark suits. Neptunic is not new to the anti-shark suit game, but has recently come up with some new lighter material that protects about as good as the old chainmail.
