This is a clever hack that exploits a Google bug in Chromecast and allows the Chromecast to be hijacked. By “hijacked” I mean you can take control of the Chromecast dongle and play whatever movie/video you want on your neighbors TV. Fun right? Read on for more details of the RickMote Controller for Chromecast hacking.
Dan Petro, a smart type with the Bishop Fox consultancy created the RickMote Controller. The RickMote uses a Rasberry Pi mini-computer to do this bit of magic. The RickMote locates nearby Chromecast devices then takes them over and plays everyones favorite song, via a YouTube music video, Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”
"When this loss of connectivity occurs, the Chromecast tries to reconfigure and accepts commands from anyone within proximity," Petro wrote. "The Rickmote automatically provides this configuration in the form of everyone's favorite Rick Astley song on loop."
