If you don’t trust the big guys to store your data (email, files, and photos) maybe it is time you took things into your own hands, without all of the hard work. Sure, you could set up your own email and file server but the email side of things is a bit trickier than you might think. I’m not going to address the creepiness and breaches of the big data companies out there. This is just about taking a more active role in getting your data (mainly email) back in your hands. Enter The Helm personal server.
The Helm personal server has thought of a bunch of the important details; such as controlling your own mail (on your own domain/URL), encrypting your data, and avoiding traditional mail server headaches. It isn’t perfect, and AWS is still in the middle, but it is better than the big webmail companies if you don’t want your email scanned and monetized. Check it out here. Also, while there is plenty of information about this little personal email server on the Helm site, if you want tons of info read here.
