Yamaha YZF-R2 Debuts in India: 204cc R-Series Firecracker

Big caveat up front: the Yamaha YZF-R2 is an India debut, not a US showroom bike. If you’re reading this from Ohio and already measuring garage space, pump the brakes — this one’s for Blue Square dealers and Indian riders first. Still worth staring at, because Yamaha chose India for the global reveal of a brand-new ~200 cc R-series machine that slots above the long-running R15.

India Yamaha Motor unveiled the R2 on August 27, 2026, priced INR 2,30,5002,53,000 ex-showroom Delhi across three variants. Deliveries are slated for mid-September 2026. Specs and pricing come straight from the official IYM launch note and the dedicated R2 microsite — bookmark those if you’re actually shopping, not just vibing on press photos.

204cc, 26.5 PS, 149 kg — the fun math

Under the fairing sits a newly developed liquid-cooled DOHC single: 204cc, 26.5 PS, and a claimed kerb weight of 149 kg on the base bike (mid/top variants tick up a kilo). Thats properly light for the class, and it’s wrapped in dual-channel ABS, traction control, and a 5-inch color TFT with Yamaha’s phone-friendly navigation/connectivity suite. Street / Sport / Rain modes — plus custom tweakability on the electronics — mean Monday traffic and Sunday twisties can share one key without arguing.

  • Base R2 — INR 2,30,500 — clean looks, black wheels, core electronics locked in
  • Mid quickshifter variant — about INR 2,39,500, bi-directional shifter, body-colored wheels
  • Flagship R2M — INR 2,53,000 — adjustable suspension bits, smart key, faux-suede seat, dress-up bling

We’ve covered Yamahas wilder side before from stripping an R1 into the MT-10 to the three-wheeled “what even is that? NIKEN. The R2 is a different mood: small-displacement supersport energy for riders who’ve outgrown the R15 but aren’t ready to marry a middleweight insurance quote.

Why India first matters

Building and launching the R2 in India isn’t just a press-release flourish it puts a proper R-series face in a segment where the KTM RC 200 already throws elbows. Yamaha kept the R15 on sale too, so the showroom becomes a staircase instead of a cliff: R15 for learners and thrifty thrill-seekers, R2 for the “I want more chassis, more electronics, and a quicker shift” crowd. Diamond-frame talk and DLC-coated valvetrain bits are the nerdy cherries on top if you read the fine print.

US fans shouldnt hold their breath. Trademark gossip exists in the moto press, but as of this writing there’s no North American allocation, pricing, or EPA paperwork to point at. Enjoy the photos, envy the power-to-weight chat on forums, and if you’re actually in India — go sit on one at a Blue Square shop when deliveries open mid-September.
