Nike Apex Packs Four Air Zoom Units Into a Zero-Drop Marathon Weapon

Sponsored Spotlight

Nike Apex marathon racing shoe product hero official

Adidas just swept Berlin and starred in the sub-2-hour circus, so Nike did what Nike does: drop a bigger, weirder air bomb. Meet the Nike Apex – the brand’s new pinnacle marathon racer with four Air Zoom units in two double-stacked pairs under the forefoot, more Air than Nike has ever packed into a racing shoe. Official availability window is January 2027 at nike.com and select retailers. There is no public buy page yet. Press outlets put MSRP around $350; Nike’s own newsroom does not list a price on the announcement page.

The midsole story is ZoomX LT – Nike’s new race foam that the company says is softer, lighter, and higher energy-return than standard ZoomX – wrapped around those stacked Air Zoom pods. Above the air stack sits a raised inverse-wave carbon fiber Flyplate shaped to shove load into the units while keeping forward drive and stability. Geometry is the wild card: a 40mm zero-drop stack (heel and forefoot both at the World Athletics ceiling) instead of the usual racer offset.

Nike’s lab brag sheet: up to ~40% more energy return than Alphafly 3 (men’s size 10 claim) and more than 10% less weight. Press puts the scale tip at about 6.2 oz (men’s US 8.5 / ~176g). Up top, a sockliner-free Flyknit X upper with a fitted knit collar is supposed to disappear on foot. Outsole callouts include GOATEK and Fast Shot rubber where Nike thinks you actually need grip – less rubber where you do not.

Apex sits at the top of Nike’s new “race-day system of speed” alongside Alphafly 4 (mass-market super shoe vibes, wider launch sooner) and the upcoming Swooshfly (invitation-to-race-day plate shoe). Apex is the “chase every second” halo – not the daily trainer, not the first-timer carbon shoe. Expect elites to wave it around at majors before civilians get a checkout button.

Fair caveats: this is an announcement, not a try-on. No nike.com PDP for the marathon Apex yet (search “Apex” and you will drown in bucket hats). Specs and energy-return claims are Nike’s; price is press-reported. Stack geometry and rulebook racing shoes change how your calves feel – treat zero-drop race day like a skill, not a meme. Re-check nike.com closer to January 2027 for colorways, size runs, and real checkout.

Want other footwear rabbit holes while you wait? Our old-school Oliver Cabell Phoenix sneaker and the Puma Fi self-tying shoes still scratch the “shoes as gadgets” itch. Tracking the miles until Apex ships? Amazfit T-Rex 3 is the wrist computer we actually lived with.
