A F-111 fighter jet flying over homes in Evans Head, northern NSW, nailed a pelican causing significant damage to the plane (and pelican), forcing an emergency landing. The jet was flying at 3,000 feet and 340mph over homes when the collision occurred. The pelican pelican struck the fiberglass nosecone causing severe damage, and put a hole in one wing before being sucked into an engine. Poor pelican.
