Remember when every Kickstarter “smart helmet” promised Iron Man and delivered a PowerPoint? Shoei just skipped the drama. The Shoei GT-Air 3 Smart, co-built with French HUD specialists Eyelights, is actually shipping: GPS nav, speed, calls, and music projected onto the visor, with Google Assistant and Siri along for the ride.
New Atlas pegs the helmet-plus-HUD package at roughly $1,500, nearly double the ~$779 standard GT-Air 3. That is a lot of money for “stop glancing at your phone,” which is also exactly the point of a motorcycle HUD.
The clever bit is focal distance. The floating image sits about 3 m (9.8 ft) out, so your eyes do not have to yank focus off the road to read a turn. EyeLights’ Nano-OLED can hit up to 5,000 nits, which is marketing-speak for “still readable when the sun is being rude.” Hardware includes an optic module in the helmet center, antenna, noise-canceling mic, speakers, side controls, and a battery claimed at over 10 hours.
Comms are baked into the shell, not bolted on like a lunchbox (sorry Sena). Universal intercom works across brands and, per New Atlas, is not boxed in by the usual range or group-size limits. If you have been living with a clip-on brick since the Shoei Neotec II / Sena SRL era, this is that idea with a projector attached.
Under the gadgets, it is still a proper touring lid: AIM shell, multi-density EPS, ECE 22/06, EQRS emergency cheek-pad release, Pinlock-ready CNS-1C visor, QSV-2 drop-down sun shield, and the usual closable brow/chin intakes plus rear exhausts. Shoei Europe lists Matt Black, Matt Deep Grey, and White coming soon on the SMART lineup.
HUD motorcycle helmets are not new around here. We covered the ambitious Skully AR-1 and later the Jarvish Kickstarter wave. The difference this time is a 1959 helmet brand putting its name on the lid and stock actually leaving shelves.
Is an extra ~$700 over a normal GT-Air 3 “worth it” versus a fancy intercom plus a bar-mounted GPS? Only if you value not looking down at intersections more than you value that cash. Test one in daylight before you marry it.
