ICON A5 Folding Airplane

The year is 2008 and I still don’t have my Jetson’s Jet Pack! However by 2010 a versatile and safe, personal airplane may become a reality. The ICON A5 is a new Amphibious Light Sport Airplane poised to become a serious contender in this exciting new field. Today you can already get a personal flying device, but there are many issues that are yet to be addressed. For under 30K it is possible to get an ultralight flier, but you sacrifice safety, comfort and speed. For a bit more, you can get a small plane, but still face safety issues, alternative landing limitations, plus storage-hangar costs and ground mobility limitations (hard to tow a plane on the freeway). The ICON A5 offers much flexibility, it can take off and land on water or hard terrain. It comes with a parachute that allows the entire airplane to simply float to the ground! Its wings fold allowing the airplane to be towed off the airfield into a garage instead of an expensive hangar. With flying range of 300nm and maximum flying speed of 120mph it’s ideal for island hopping. The cockpit and instrument panel looks like that of a car – demystified from that of a regular plane. In short, if they actually build these – I want one!

I have not been able to find a vid of this thing. Is there a flying prototype out?

They showed a prototype at some air show, but it wasn’t flying. More of an “unveiling” type of event.
