Lifesaver – Water Bottle With Built-In Filter
Cool inventions like the Lifesaver water filtration water bottle are making water purification easier. Remember the water purification bike… not so easy. The lifesaver bottle by Michael Pritchard will purify 4,000 to 6,000 liters on a single (replaceable) filter. The filter will eliminate bacteria, viruses, parasites, fungi, and other microbiological waterborne pathogens.

Filtering 750ml of water takes just under 1 minute, and once the cartridge expires, the unit will shut itself off. Price is a little extreme, but would be a awesome part of the “just in case” kit. If this was out during Y2k i’m sure it would have sold out.
Well think about it… $460 is a lot less than buying 2 liters worth of water for yourself everyday for then next five years without it…
If you order it from the Lifesaver Systems’ USA site, it is 230 USD. Still not cheap but a lot better than 230 pounds sterling.

This device was supposedly invented to help supply water to areas devastated by natural disasters. While I believe that everyone is entitled to a fair profit from their ingenuity, I think the marketers of the Life Saver bottle are outright thieves. The manufacturing costs cannot possibly justify such an outrageous price. The only reason it is so expensive is that it has military applications, and the major purchasers will be governments cavalierly spending citizens’ tax dollars.
As you can see the price is coming down and likely will drop further. Like any product it’s expensive out of the gate because there are sorts of expenses with gearing up a production and quality control line. Over time these expenses can be leveraged over quantity sold.
My thought was why this device didn’t make Time Magazine’s top 50 inventions of the year for 2007. I guess saving the world from disease and dehydration is no match for the iPhone.
