Toyota Wants To Bring Sexy Back With Their New GT 86

Toyota GT86

The all new Toyota GT 86 (and 2013 Scion FR-S) should hit the Tokyo Motor Show later this week.  The GT 86 is Toyotas attempt at bringing back the "fun to drive" rear-wheel drive from the 80's and 90's.  You may notice some design cues from the old AE86 Toyota Corolla or the 2000GT.

The big shocker here is the use of a Subaru boxer engine, the world's first horizontally opposed D-4S engine.  Not sure why Toyota wants to collaborate with a competitor, but oh well.  Subaru will get their own version of this car, they will call it the BRZ.

The engine will be mounted very low making a 475-millimeter center of gravity, the lowest of any volume production car currently available.

The D-4S, with separate twin injectors for both direct injection and port injection, has a high compression ratio of 12.5:1. This will provide plenty of power, plenty of torque, and lower emissions.

The 2.0-liter Subaru engine will make 197 horsepower (at 7,000 rpm) and 151 pound-feet of torque (at 6,600 rpm) with a redline at 7,500 rpm.  Video of the Toyota GT 86 after the break.
